C.P.I.P Forms Strategic Partnership with McMaster University

We are pleased to announce that the Community Paramedic Integration Project (CPIP) has entered into a formal partnership with McMaster University, led by Dr. Gina Agarwal from the Department of Family Medicine and Vulnerable Individuals in Primary Care (VIP) Research Lab. This partnership is grounded in a shared commitment to improving access to healthcare in rural communities across Sri Lanka. The newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlines our joint efforts to design and deliver community-based paramedic programs in Sri Lanka

We are grateful to Dr. Agarwal and her team for their leadership and vision. This partnership brings us one step closer to creating a model of care that can be adapted and expanded to other regions in need.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) confirms a formal partnership between CPIP and McMaster University, led by Dr. Gina Agarwal of the Department of Family Medicine and the VIP Research Lab. The goal is to work together on developing community paramedic programs that improve health outcomes through preventive care, education, and early intervention in rural Sri Lanka.

Key areas of collaboration include:

  • Developing tailored community paramedic programs

  • Joint training for EMTs, healthcare workers, and volunteers

  • Sharing knowledge and resources in health education and prevention

  • Evaluating program impact and effectiveness

  • Conducting collaborative research and publishing results

This is the first formal academic partnership for CPIP, and it provides a strong foundation for evidence-based community paramedicine in Sri Lanka. McMaster University’s research expertise and CPIP’s grassroots implementation make this collaboration uniquely positioned to drive meaningful change.

The project is led by Dr. Gina Agarwal, a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University, and founder of the VIP Research Lab, which focuses on vulnerable populations and community-based care.

By focusing on prevention, education, and early care, the partnership aims to reduce the burden on hospitals, improve health literacy, and make basic healthcare more accessible in rural and underserved communities.
